THE STORY

HAI HAI: THE STORY

In the vibrant musical landscape of 2003, the UK was poised for a seismic shift. A ground breaking sound emerged, known as Desi Beats, a fusion of South Asian roots with elements of Hip-Hop, RnB, House, UK Garage, and Drum 'n' Bass. Its pulsating rhythms took the world by storm, but it was in the heart of UK's inner cities where its influence resonated the strongest.

Deep within a studio in Southall, West London, the Panjabi Hit Squad were on the cusp of creating their magnum opus, 'Hai Hai'. The track, a masterful blend of UK Garage infused with the desi vocals of Satwinder Bitti from Panjab, India, was elevated to new heights by the lyrical prowess of Ms Scandalous, a chance encounter in a local record store that marked the emergence of one of the first female South Asian MCs.

The song's impact was nothing short of explosive. A guerrilla marketing campaign, backed by heavyweights like BBC 1Xtra, Kiss 100, Galaxy FM, MTV Base, Channel U and a host of others, solidified its status as a cultural phenomenon. 'Hai Hai' broke through boundaries, transcending the confines of the Desi Beats scene to become an integral part of mainstream pop culture.

HOT 'N' SPICY

The 90’s hailed a new sound coming from the streets of the UK with a unique blend of music, culture, and community. As the beats of Bhangra, Bollywood, and other South Asian genres reverberated through venues, the dance floors became vibrant spaces where individuals from diverse backgrounds came together.

5 days a week, club-goers would pack into clubs across the UK but it was on a Tuesday at The Limelight club on Shaftsbury Ave in London that attracted the most attention. over 1000 people would come each week from all over the UK to celebrate and enjoy the new hybrid mix of music that was being created. It became epicentre of this musical revolution, where DJs skilfully blended traditional South Asian sounds with contemporary Hip Hop, R'n'B, UK Garage, Dancehall and Jungle beats, creating an intoxicating mix that transcended borders.

The South Asian club scene of the 90s not only provided a platform for cultural celebration but also served as a melting pot where diverse communities converged to dance, connect, and revel in the rich tapestry of South Asian music and identity.
